I've found myself

on Google Maps' street view.

Search Terminal Way in Pittsburgh. I'm standing at the end of the street looking across the river to the city. Now you know what I really do at work.

this week in England

1. A caller phoned into the local radio station this week after a major snowstorm hit our area dumping 1 inch of snow on the ground. She wanted to warn drivers in the Chatsworth area to be very careful on the roads. The road crews had just salted the roads and the sheep were in the street licking the salt.

2. Badminton is a real sport in this country. Yesterday, Jason was scheduled to fill in on a team that needed an extra player. The game was called off due to the weather.

3. It snowed this week. A couple of inches. Apparently the biggest snowstorm in 20 years or so. It was very pretty, but Britons don't handle snow very well.

4. I bought a teapot. and I love it.

5. After the snowstorm, the news anchors instructed people not to shovel their sidewalks. If someone were to fall and get hurt, you could be sued.

london bridges. a lesson.

You may scoff, but it was not until just last week that a game I played when I was young finally made sense. London Bridge is falling down... You know the game, so I won't bother you with the details, but if you imagine the setup of the two children making the bridge, you'll recognize the striking resemblance with this bridge:

But, what you may not know is this is not the London Bridge. It's the tower bridge. This is the London Bridge:

A bit less exciting, isn't it? It's a good thing "Tower bridge is falling down..." still works with the meter.

Here's another bridge: The Millineum Bridge. It's a pedestrian bridge that wobbled when it was first built because someone forgot to take into account the fact that people sort of sway back and forth even when they're walking straight ahead. But, for all that, it's a pretty neat bridge:

shaken

Yesterday, around 11:45 am, I was shaken out of a deep trance of work by some loud blasts outside coming from downtown Pittsburgh. When I looked out the window, I saw billows of smoke and a quite a few bright flashes of lights in the clouds. After a bit of careful research (I read the newspaper article over the shoulder of the guy in front of me on the trolley) I discovered the cause of the blasts: Fireworks. In the middle of the day. To mark Pittsburgh's 250th birthday. Which is in October.
